Why does roof permit history matter?

  • Roof age. A re-roof permit is the most reliable record of when a roof was replaced. See how to find out how old a roof is.
  • Storm targeting. Homes inside a hail swath that were re-roofed last year are not leads; homes with no roof permit in 15 years are.
  • Insurance. Many insurers pay older roofs at actual cash value, so roof age changes what a claim is worth.
  • Compliance. Most jurisdictions require a permit for a full re-roof. See do you need a permit to replace a roof.

What is in Hail Pro's building code data?

For each jurisdiction where it is documented: the adopted code family and edition (for example 2021 IRC or the Florida Building Code), design wind speed and ground snow load, and roofing requirements such as ice and water shield, drip edge, secondary water barriers, Class 4 impact resistance, product approvals and Florida's 25% re-roof rule, with the source and a confidence level.

Frequently asked questions

How do I look up roof permits for an address?

Search the address on the city or county building department's permit portal (the city inside city limits, the county outside them). Hail Pro shows the permit history on each property card where it has the jurisdiction's data.
